Short – Artist Statement
G. Richard (Rick) Haley
www.rhaleyphoto@gmail.com
Our world is constantly buzzing with life, movement, and sometimes even chaos. However, when you capture a photograph, you strip away all that noise, leaving you with a frozen moment in time. As a photographer, my goal is to restore that dynamic experience for the viewer and create an expressive image—one that evokes emotions, tells a story, or highlights the beauty of nature. I aspire to create a Moment in Time for my audience — one they will enjoy. I don’t see myself merely as a photographer who creates art; instead, I view myself as an artist working in the medium of photography.

Terry Hughes

Bio:

Terry Hughes is a dynamic and imaginative artist whose life reflects a profound spirit of reinvention, creativity, and community engagement. Born in Yale, Michigan, and raised in Pleasant Hill, California, Terry’s early life was shaped by his father’s work with Kaiser Industries and the post-war boom in the Bay Area. He graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1961, excelling in both academics and basketball, before discovering his passion for ceramics at Chico State University—his self-proclaimed “Harvard of Northern California”—where he earned a degree in fine arts. Although his artistic path took a temporary detour when he worked as a craps dealer in Lake Tahoe, Terry eventually returned to his roots, earning a teaching credential and launching a rewarding career as an art teacher at College Park High School. His trajectory shifted again after a teacher strike, leading him to a successful career in financial planning—specifically helping fellow educators secure their futures—while continuing to support and create art. In 1977, Terry settled in Benicia, California, where he became deeply involved in the local arts community. He not only collected original artworks on a modest budget, but also became a founding member of Benicia’s first plein air gallery. Quietly offering financial guidance to Arts Benicia during challenging times, he remained dedicated to nurturing creativity without seeking the spotlight. In the early 2000s, Terry rekindled his own artistic pursuits, transitioning from ceramics to painting. He joined figure drawing classes in Crockett and later studied oil painting under Jerry Turner, embracing the palette knife with bold enthusiasm. His work, including a memorable large-scale painting of a giraffe inspired by a WWII story, showcases his expressive style and willingness to tackle ambitious themes. From the hills of Mount Diablo to the charming streets of Clayton, Terry has continued to explore the plein air tradition with curiosity and vigor. His evolution as an artist—paired with his contributions as a teacher, financial advisor, and community advocate—makes him a treasured figure in Benicia’s cultural life. Terry Hughes’ journey is a testament to lifelong learning, creative resilience, and the enduring power of artistic expression.

Don McCartney - Graphic Artist

Don McCartney - Graphic Artist

Bio:

Don was born and spent his earliest years in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Small town life informed his boyhood days in Parsons, Kansas, where his grandmother was the only art teacher for the entire school system (K-12 +Jr.College). The family moved when his father’s job took them to Belleville, Illinois, where high school years brought art-making sharply into focus. Attending Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, he thrived in a curriculum of life drawing, studio and plein air painting, commercial design, illustration, perspective, lettering and art history courses. Don graduated with honors and an A.A. in Commercial Design.
Following graduation and a year at his first professional job at a design studio in St. Louis, Don went west to San Francisco in early 1970. There, he had the good fortune and timing to be hired as a production artist in the art department of Rolling Stone magazine, then only in their third year of publication. This led to additional layout responsibilities and designing books for Straight Arrow Books, a division of Rolling Stone. Other publication design and art direction jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area include: Earth Times magazine, Rags magazine, Clear Creek magazine, City magazine (of San Francisco) and California Monthly magazine (UC Berkeley Alumni). All of that fed into a 25-year employment at the Hearst Corporation-owned San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle as Senior Designer, Art Director and Design Director. Leaving the Chronicle in 2002, he has continued to work as an independent contractor, with clients ranging from corporations, non-profits, the arts, ballet to booze and beyond.
Don’s goals as a graphic artist have been to design impactful, on-message products with understated elegance in design and the aim to exceed a client’s expectations. Don’s fine art prints are informed by his career as a publication designer, where access to vast resources have given rise to some of his most recent works. Combining his original watercolors and drawings with typography and other scanned imagery, he creates digital collages in Photoshop. Custom permanent pigment prints (aka giclée prints) are made on paper or canvas. The prints are available in a variety of sizes and commissions are welcomed
